The “old city” is the firstborn part of Bari: inside the antique walls there are a maze of white alleys near the sea, where you can discover as many as 40 big and small churches, including the famous “Saint Nicholas Basilica”, one of the most shining examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

Bitonto

The old town has a lot of churches, including the Roman-style famous “Apulian Con-Cathedral, baroque-style as the San Gaetano church,or the “Chapel of the Mysteries”, in the San Domenico church, valuable examples of Renaissance architecture such as the Sylos-Vulpano and Sylos-Calò Palaces. Home of the first Apulian National Gallery in Puglia and the largest Diocesan museum in southern Italy, in 2004 it was recognized as a “city of art”. For the quality and quantity of its artistic treasures has been included in the short list, decided by the Cultural Heritage Ministry, of the ten finalists for the Italian City of Culture in 2020 competition.

Giovinazzo

Sovereto

The Sovereto borough is a very beautiful medieval village, although small, hometown of the Madonna di Sovereto Sanctuary, protector of Terlizzi town. The little church with the well in which was found the painting of the black Madonna, is very impressive. Here you will find a magnificent wooden altar and the medieval knights burials that frame the faithful devotion that every April 23 accompanies the Holy Mother to the summer holidays. The Protector will return each second August Sunday riding a triumphal chariot, a 7th century baroque machine 23 meters high.

Castel Del Monte

Castel Del Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, built by King Frederick the second in the 13th century, is a unique world monument whose the exact function is still unknown. The octagon, on which the plan of the complex and its elements is composed, is a strongly symbolic geometric form because is the intermediate figure between the square, symbol of the earth, and the circle, symbol of the infinity of the sky, and therefore would mark the passage from the first to the second.

Polignano a mare

Polignano a Mare is one of the most evocative towns of Puglia, in the south of Bari. The town is located on a rocky spur that, jutting out over the Adriatic Sea, offers a wonderful and suggestive view, both to those who look towards the horizon and those who want to admire the city, so romantically floating on this picturesque stretch of coast. Matera

Matera is located on a rocky outcrop in Basilicata Region. Includes the “Sassi area”, a complex of Cave Houses dug into the mountain, inhabited since the Paleolithic period. Since 1993 the “Sassi area” have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sassi now host museums such as the “Casa Grotta” in Solitary Alley, with antique furniture and handicrafts. One of the nearby rupestrian churches is “Santa Lucia alle Malve”, fulfill with 13th century frescoes.
